Psychoeducational testing provides the basis for an evaluation of a wide range of difficulties that affect academic functioning. The diagnosis of a learning disability, attention deficit disorder, emotional difficulty, or behavioral problem is made based upon the integration of test results, direct observation, and interviews.

A full psychoeducational evaluation may be necessary to document the need for academic accommodations at a school or college. Typically this includes a parent interview, two or three testing sessions, an interview of the student, and a feedback session. A written report is provided.

Commonly administered tests include ability tests such as the Wechlsler Intelligence Scale for Children-4th Edition, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-4th Edition, Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-3rd Edition, or Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales-5th Edition.

Achievement batteries include the Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement-2nd Edition, or the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement-Third Edition.

Other tests that may be administered include the Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA8), Gray Oral Reading Test-4th Edition, Test of Written Language-4th Edition, Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing, Wechsler Memory Scale-4th Edition, Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities-3rd Edition, and the Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests-Revised. In addition, the evaluation of executive functioning, study skills, fine motor skill, and personality variables are components of a full assessment.
